Better Meals for Everybody
Aamilah Slamet was a young lady from Macassar in the Western Cape. Her favourite school subjects were science and biology, in which she excelled. She had a passion for helping the underprivileged. She wanted to become a dietician so that she could make sure that people ate healthy and nutritious food.
Her parents died in a car accident when she was twelve years old and she went to live with her grandmother who supported them with her old age pension. Unfortunately her grandmother passed away while Aamilah was in grade 11. Due to financial constraints, she had to drop out of school and started a job as a packer at the local supermarket to support herself. She gave up on her dream of becoming a dietician. Instead, she decided to start a feeding scheme for the poor people of her community to make sure they had one healthy and nutritious meal a day.
She managed to get the supermarket to donate fruit and vegetables that were no longer fresh enough to sell. She also asked the local bakery for day-old bread and a couple of butchers for soup bones and meat off-cuts. With these ingredients she cooked a pot of soup or stew every day to feed between 50 and 80 people. Although she helped quite a few people, she realised that she could do so much more if she could just get to the people in the neighbouring communities such as Khayelitsha, Mitchells Plain, and Strand where so many more people needed help.
Aamilah wanted to develop a system to prepare and distribute meals to the poor and needy people of the communities in the Western Cape. She has a piece of land of about 50 square metres available in Macassar where she can prepare the meals.
